Big Ideas for Small Lots NYC: An Infill Competition

Fee: None
Eligibility: Open to all architects and designers. Finalists that do not include a New York State registered architect or professional engineer will be required to do so in order to participate in Stage II.
Sites: All of the sites, the measurements of which can be found in the competition brief, vary in size:
– Manhattan (6)
– Brooklyn (6)
– Staten Island (6)
– Bronx (3)
– Queens (2)
Timetable:
22 February 2019 – Questions Due
24 March 2019 – Stage I submission deadline
May, 2019 – Stage I Finalists Announced
May – July, 2019 | Finalist Workshops and Meetings
1 August- 2 November 2019 – Exhibition at Center for Architecture
September, 2019 – Finalists Submit Stage II Development Proposals
November, 2019 | Site Designation(s)
Awards: Five finalist will receive $3,000 each to develop their designs for Stage II
HPD may choose to designate one or more Proposals formulated in Stage II to be constructed by the applicable Development Team(s) for affordable housing on City-owned land.
Goals of the Competition:
• Promoting excellence in urban infill design
• Exploring design and construction strategies to inform quality, affordable, small- home development
• Demonstrating feasible, replicable housing solutions across various site and neighborhood conditions
• Engaging and building capacity of architects to act as critical partners in the development of City-owned, vacant sites
