Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Expansion

Kansas City’s Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has announced it will stage a design competition for an expansion to accommodate its growing art collection. The event will take place beginning in this September with the announcement of a Request for Qualifications (RfQ). The management of the competition will be headed by competition adviser, Malcolm Reading Consultants (MRC) of London. MRC managed the Dallas Art Museum’s competition in 2023, won by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos of Spain.

This is not the first competition by the museum to add space for its holdings. A 1999 competition won by Steven Holl was realized to much acclaim. In that case, the winning design chose to situate a series of small pavilions, accessible underground, stretching along northern border of the museum’s park.

The RfQ for this competition is scheduled to be released sometime in September.
