This Taichung Tower Competition, won by Elizabeth de Portzamparc, is a second competition for this Taichung Gateway site. A previous competition held for the same project was cancelled, as the City client decided that the winning design by Sou Fujimoto could pose a dangerous risk to visitors. This project was part of an ambitious plan by the City, which also included a new Cultural Center, won by SANAA, and a design competition for a Gateway Park plan, won by Catherine Mossbach / Philippe Rahm.
The competition was a two-stage, invited competition, and the other finalists were:
– T.C.K. Architect Engineer Planner + AZUSA SEKKEI co., ltd (Taiwan/Japan)

– FEI & CHENG Associates + Che Fu Chang Architects + Chien Architects and associates (Taiwan)

– Y.C. Hsu Architect & Associate + Moriyama &Teshima architects (Taiwan/Canada)

– Kengo Kuma &Associates (Japan)

A comprehensive article with images from all the participating firms will appear later this month.
