Eligibility: Open to Canadian design professionals (landscape architects, architects, urban planners). Eligible consultants must have on their team a lead project manager that must be a licensed landscape architect (member of CSLA/AAPC or its component associations). Collaborative multi-disciplinary teams are allowed and encouraged.

Registration Fee: No fee for electronic copy – $54 for original hard copy

Jury: Independent urban design jury which will include practicing design professionals and representatives from the Urban Design Peer Review Panel. Names to be announced.

Awards: Each successful first stage proponents (the jury will select up to 5 teams) will be awarded $2,500 dollars honorarium for the second stage of the competition to develop a proposal for the Market Lane. The winner of the second stage will enter into a contract with the City of London to prepare construction and tender documents and provide contract administration for the realization of his / her design.

Timeline:
Early September 2011 – RFQ issued
September 23, 2011 – Deadline for Submissions of RFQ
Early October 2011 – Jury to review entries and identify up to five (5) qualified proponents
Mid-October 2011 – Shortlisted candidates announced and competition launches by issuing RFP
Mid-November 2011 – Deadline for submissions of entries
December 1st 2011 – Jury to review entries and select a winner
December 19, 2011 – City Council to endorse winner to be hired to produce construction documents, subject to capital budget approval
April 2012 – Tender of detailed project
June 2012 – Award of project to successful bidder
July to October 2012 – Construction
November 2012 – Grand Opening of the new Market Lane

Design challenge: The City of London, Canada is preparing to hold a design competition for the Market Lane to bring creativity, new ideas, and vision to this unique pedestrian space, and to showcase what excellent design can bring to Downtown London. Market Lane is a short pedestrian laneway linking Dundas Street to the Covent Garden Market, one of the main hubs in Downtown London today. This unique public space is currently showing signs of needed rejuvenation. The emerging Downtown Master Plan calls for a new framework for public spaces and the Market Lane is a great opportunity to demonstrate to the public what excellent urban design and placemaking principles can do to enhance the Downtown. The ultimate goal of the competition is to re-build Market Lane in time for the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships. Construction budget is estimated at $550,000.00.

Submission requirements: one (1) original hard copy along with one (1) digital copy (on CD or memory stick). The submission document shall be a maximum of ten (10) pages. Digital file must be a single PDF document not exceeding 30 Mb including:

1) RFQ SUBMISSION FORM (as provided): Please include one original copy signed and dated

2) Curriculum Vitae of the firm including all contact information (1 page);

3) Curriculum Vitae of design team members (1 page maximum per person);

4) Demonstrated project experience with projects of similar scale by showing three (3) examples of past relevant work with images, short description of project, client, budget, timeline of design/construction, references (1 page maximum per project);

5) Statement of Project Understanding (1 page – max 500 words – can include pictures)

6) General Design Philosophy of the firm on Public Spaces (1 page – max 500 words- can include pictures)

IMPORTANT: DESIGN TEAMS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO SUBMIT ANY IDEAS, DRAWINGS OR CREATIVE WORKS REGARDING THE MARKET LANE AT THIS STAGE OF THE PROJECT – DOING SO WILL RESULT IN BEING DISQUALIFIED.
