Selected participants would be invited to participate in the second and main stage of the competition, seeking detailed designs / drawings / models, etc.
REC, for its corporate headquarters, township and upgrading of CIRE is looking for the following aspects in the design:

For this purpose Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has allotted a plot of land measuring 16,890.25 sqm (about 4.2acres) at I-4, City Centre, Sector-29, Gurgaon to the Corporation for development and construction of its new office building with FAR * (Floor Area Ratio) equal to one and has issued a letter of intent for allotment of 10 acres (about 40,000 sqm) of land in Sector-57, Gurgaon for construction for REC township with FAR equal to 1.75. THE COMPETITION:
Futbol Club Barcelona, on occasion of the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the Camp Nou, is calling for an international tender for architects to develop a project for the remodeling the stadium. The stadium is the icon of FC Barcelona and the objective is to transform it into an integrated and highly visible urban element. The stadium forms part of a broader renovation project, which will include a set of other buildings that are excluded from the present tender and which will be used for sports and other club related activities. These buildings will which will occupy the area between the Travessera de Les Corts, Arístides Maillol, Joan XXIII and Carrer Maternitat streets. The project must strengthen the identity of FC BARCELONA, differentiating it from other stadiums and buildings used for football around the world. The project must facilitate the use of the land around the new stadium, as open spaces that can be enjoyed by the general public. The new stadium building must occupy a maximum ground area of 52,000 m2, with a height of no more than +130.00 m above sea level corresponding to a height of 40 metres above ground level. The essential elements of the original structure of 1957 must be maintained. This structure which was designed by the architects Mitjans-Soteres, was built up to a height of +23.00 m above ground level, apart from the present day grandstand cover. These must be used as the base for the new edification, and will constitute the minimum gauge for activity. A maximium number of seats should be covered in the future stadium, with a minimum of 50% of the stands. The renovation of the facilities does not necessarily imply a major increase in the capacity, but should rather involve improvements in terms of comfort, ease of access and service facilities, especially on days when sports events take place. It should also be based on improvements of public transport as foreseen by the mobility study. The new building must also be able to serve purposes that complete the “football” function at times when there are no sports events, and taking into account the available covered area. The refurbishing work for the new building must be planned considering the continuation of FC BARCELONA’s football activities at the stadium. he renovation project must take into consideration the need for the pitch to receive sufficient sunlight and ventilation necessary for maintaining the grass in optimal condition.

LOS ANGELES 2057: 50th Anniversary Design Competition
SPONSOR: Department of Landscape Architecture, Cal Poly Pomona
TYPE: Open, international, ideas
LOCATION: Los Angeles
LANGUAGE: English
TIMETABLE:
01 Apr 2007 – Registration and Submission Deadline
Submit entries digitally to [email protected]
JURY: Mike Abbate, principal, greenworks, p.c.; Jeanine Centouri, principal, urbanrock design; Phil Pregill, department head, cal poly pomona, Peter Aeschbacher, co-founder, cityworks los angeles
AWARDS:
1st Prize – $3000
2nd Prize – $1500
3rd Prize – $750
Up to seven honorable mentions
FEE: $25
BACKGROUND:
In April 2007, the Department of Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona celebrates their 50th anniversary looking back upon visions and values of society, culture and the environment through the eyes of designers. The 50th anniversary is a time for reflection and vision. It is a time to imagine the problems and opportunities the future brings and a time to collectively speculate about the role of the design professions in the next 50 years. This is a call for projects that envision life in the Los Angeles region 50 years from now to incite discussions about the future of landscapes, society and the environment.
THE COMPETITION:
Los Angeles is a bellwether – an early indicator or marker, making it an appropriate case study for the future of American cities and landscapes. The Cal Poly Pomona Department of Landscape Architecture mission is “Re – generating Los Angeles.” The term regenerative is a starting point for contemplation in this ideas competition. Fragmentation of ‘re-generate’ implies restoration of existing regimes, while ‘generate’ calls for new solutions. What will be the problems facing Los Angeles in the year 2057? How do we imagine those problems? What will be our solutions based upon our values and resources?
Competition entrants may address these questions in any fashion they feel is relevant and insightful. Should strategies be ‘top – down’ from organized governance, or large-scale, comprehensive frameworks? Or do moments – small scale inventions/interventions become the best way to address pressing issues? We welcome all speculation upon imagining the state of the future and what we wish it to be.

Healthcare 2025: Buildings for the future
Sponsor: Netherlands Board for Healthcare Institutions

Location: Utrecht, Netherlands
Timetable:
02 Apr 2007 (12:00 noon) – Registration Deadline
02 Jul 2007 (5:00 pm) – Submission Deadline
25 Sep 2007 – Jubilee Congress Netherlands Board for Healthcare Institutions, Jaarbeurs, Utrecht: prizes awarded, presentation of best designs.
Eligibility: architects and students of architecture, Dutch and other European architects
Fee:
Architects: euro 250
Students of architecture at tertiary institutions: euro50
Jury: Ms H. d’ Ancona (chair); Mr M. Crouwel, Government Architect; Mr W. Patijn, architect and deacon of TU Delft and associates
Awards:
Total euro30,000
Background:
Healthcare in Europe is changing. Many countries want more competition and an open healthcare market. The health of populations is also changing: other lifestyles, increasing prosperity and climate change, with associated consequences. Plus increasing life expectancies. Europe has more and more inhabitants older than 65, and the number of elderly seniors is also increasing: the group aged 80+ is growing fast. This will also cause the incidence of age-related illnesses to increase. Without any doubt, changes in the healthcare needs of the population will lead to a new breed of health care facilities. This architectural design competition is meant to stimulate thinking about the future of building for healthcare.
The Competition:
In 2005, land reclaimed from the IJsselmeer will be ready for occupation, sufficient for a new city of 160,000 inhabitants. The new city’s population closely mirrors that of existing Dutch cities of similar size. Healthcare for this city has to be developed from scratch. All basic facilities must be on hand, so that inhabitants only need to leave the city for high clinical care. The assignment is to develop ideas for the healthcare arrangements in this new city in 2025. These ideas must be translated into an architectural design for a healthcare facility. The entire healthcare spectrum is represented. A comprehensive description of the new city, the evaluation criteria, and the terms of reference are all included in the competition program.

TIMETABLE:
23 Mar 2007 – Inquiries Deadline
30 Mar 2007 – Expressions of Interest Deadline
BACKGROUND:
Every World Expo is unique. But the Shanghai Expo will be the most spectacular the world has seen – the first time an Expo has been held in a developing country. Shanghai 2010 will be the commercial, technological and cultural Olympics of 2010. It will be four times the size of the 2005 Expo in Aichi Japan. 2010 will be a critical time for many decision makers and organisations as the demands and challenges of the present are viewed and explored alongside the technologies and opportunities of the future. The full scope of that innovation, creativity and enterprise will be on show over 184 days of the World Expo in Shanghai, from May 1st to October 31st 2010.
THE COMPETITION:
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is looking for a suitable multi-disciplinary team to work with the FCO and its public-private partners to create a stunning and memorable UK pavilion at the Shanghai Expo 2010. The theme of the Expo is ‘Better City-Better Life’, and the UK will be developing its core messages around sustainable development, urban regeneration and climate security. The likely total outturn cost of the scheme is approximately £10,000,000 GBP with an overall program of approximately 30 months. The procurement strategy will be developed following further feasibility analysis and it is expected that the selected team will contribute to this review.

Raising the Potential of New and Renewable Energies It’s time to revolt. At any scale, intelligent and innovative methods to reduce our energy use are critical to our survival. For our first competition challenge, we are calling for revolutionary ideas about how to power an imaginary city block with new ideas on renewable energies. Begin with the existing infrastructure – rooftops, bus shelters, telephone poles-then invent what’s needed. Explore solar, wind, water and beyond. And whether you’re powering the entire city block or a single shop, think more from less.
Consider:
How industry can stop polluting the air and water
How visitors can generate energy for the building
How buildings can capture the sun and wind
How offices can be more energy efficient
How homes can lower their utility bills to zero

The public swimming pool facility is due to be reprovided elsewhere during 2007. Eltham Baths is situated on the north side of Eltham Hill (A210) with return frontage onto Sherard Road. AWARDS:
1st Prize – $15,000
2nd Prize – $10,000
3rd Prize – $5,000
Honorable Mention – $500
THE COMPETITION:
Gateway was designated the first urban National Recreation Area on October 27, 1972, exactly one century after Yellowstone became the first national park in the United States and the world. Thirty-five years later, Gateway continues to struggle to meet the aspirations of its founders, to negotiate its relationship with the communities that surround it, and to balance the goals of historic preservation, environmental conservation, and active recreation.
A 26,607 acre site stretching across the New York-New Jersey harbor and coast, Gateway has incredible potential to become a global model for re-conceptualizing the role of national parks relative to an increasingly urbanized landscape. We must acknowledge the growing urgency to bridge science, design and politics when addressing today’s built environment, and redefine environmental stewardship and cultural patronage to match the scale of contemporary urban development patterns and needs. Envisioning Gateway at this juncture will generate critical dialogue not only about the significance of national parks today, but about the ways in which thriving cities and complex ecosystems can co-exist.
The focus of the competition is twofold — competitors are being asked to address Gateway at a regional scale, and to design a new park sited at Floyd Bennett Airfield relative to its position within the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway. Floyd Bennett Field is a 1,358 acre piece of land that was New York’s first municipal airport; today, however, it suffers from a lack of identity and definition. Competitors are challenged to redefine what a “park” is today in terms of contemporary urban conditions and social/recreational needs and desires.

The Royal Armouries will be represented by Peter Armstrong, Museum Director; Karen Whitting, Head of Events & Live Interpretation; Cheryl Graham, Head of Retail; Alan Eyles, Head of Creative Production; Brian Ball, Project Assurance (Finance); and to be confirmed, a member of the Board of Trustees.
AWARDS:
From the expressions of interest 4 teams will be selected to prepare preliminary design concepts and will be invited to present their ideas to the Client at an interview. Each will be paid an honorarium of 3,000 + VAT for 2 A1 concept boards.
THE COMPETITION:
The main entrance area of the Royal Armouries building in Armouries Drive, Leeds is referred to as The Street. The Street provides access to all of the Royal Armouries Museum exhibitions and various other facilities such as shop, cafes and bistro. It also provides access to Royal Armouries (International) Ltd, a separate run organisation. At present, it is felt that the Street area lacks a visitor friendly entrance. What is required is an obvious and welcoming focal point where guests can be helped and directed toward their particular purpose or interest. The current information offered to the museum visitor is dissipated and confusing and is presented in an ad-hoc manner. Several of the stakeholders operating in the area have encroached into the space vying for customer attention. A number of events occur day to day which are hosted by different stakeholders, this leads to large groups arriving on mass at certain times of the day. At present there is no assembly point or area for them to be orientated. The Street functions as a corridor that leads toward the museum lifts and stairwell that takes visitors up into the main building. This long expanse does nothing to either encourage dwell time or create a sense of ore and wonderment that should be the essence of peoples experience when first entering the Royal Armouries Museum. The new design should be clear, strong and informative to the visitor. The overall treatment will incorporate the theme of “Protection” as well as a sense of history. The area will be family friendly, welcoming and retain a good sense of space and scale. Any elements introduced into this area must be user-friendly and sustainable in the future. The project budget is 250,000.

Aug 2009 – Houses completed for the Highland Housing Fair
ELIGIBILITY: architects worldwide partnered with an ARB registered architect
BACKGROUND:
The Highland Housing Fair (HHF) will be a first for Scotland. It is based upon similar models found in mainland Europe, particularly Finland where historically the housing fair concept has proven very successful in stimulating quality design and innovation in Finnish housing. The HHF aspires to be a catalyst to prompt a similar kind of change within the Highlands and throughout Scotland. By creating an exemplar community, it will act as a model for future housing design and development. It will showcase in excess of 50 new homes with a diversity of housing types chosen by means of a competition. The Homes will be open to the public as a ticketed event that will run for a month. The Exhibition will be held on the Exhibition Site and it is expected that in excess of 30,000 visitors will attend the HHF. The main elements of the HHF can be summarized as follows:
– The location is a green field site on the outskirts of Inverness. The mix and number of units will give a range of house types. It is intended that both the master planning and the individual houses reflect the Fair’s desire to promote ecological/ sustainable design. The Site is in the final stages of being acquired and an outline planning application will shortly be determined.
– Entrants will compete on the basis of design to purchase and build on serviced plots on the Site.
– The intention is that the competition submissions will be displayed during Highland 2007 Year of Culture as part of the Six Cities Design Festival coinciding with the 2007 RIAS Annual Convention.
– The Homes will be built for the opening of the HHF in August 2009. The HHF will be publicized to professionals and the public with visitors experiencing high quality master planning, architecture and interior/product design in addition to cutting edge technology and innovative construction. The Exhibition will be an integral part of the Fair.
– At the end of the Fair, the Homes will be sold or rented at market value by their respective plot developers and subsequently occupied by the owners/tenants.
The Highland Housing Alliance (HHA), a not-for-profit developer will be the site developer. Highland Opportunity Ltd will be responsible for management of the Exhibition.
SITE:
The Master Plan for the Site is intended to be innovative and will form the framework for this unique project. It aspires to be a model for future development within the Highlands and has generated 53 units on 27 plots, which for the purposes of the Competition will comprise a variety of house types. See brief for the House Type and indicative fixed price range for plots.

Lifecycle Building Challenge: designing this building, and the next …
Type: Open, national, 2-stage, ideas
Sponsors: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Building Materials Reuse Association, AIA, West Coast Green
Timetable:
15 Dec 2006 – Competition Launch
15 Feb 2007 – Registration Deadline
15 Apr 2007 – Submission Deadline
May – Winners Announced
Eligibility: professional architects, designers, manufacturers, builders, deconstruction experts, reuse professionals, engineers, etc. and students nationwide
Awards:
Contestant entries will be communicated to the public, industry, and government to encourage the construction of buildings that incorporate lifecycle building principles. Award and recognition will be given to notable entrants in each category.
Background:
Lifecycle building is the design of building materials, components, information systems, and management practices to create buildings that facilitate and anticipate future changes to and eventual adaptation or dismantling for recovery of all systems, components, and materials.
Also known as design for disassembly and design for deconstruction, lifecycle thinking encompasses the idea of creating buildings that are stocks of resources for future buildings. By creating building components that can be easily recovered and reused, materials are kept at their highest value, resulting in reduced consumption of energy and resources.
Waste production figures present a snapshot of valuable lost resources. These materials are known as Construction and Demolition debris (C&D):
consumes 60% of total materials flow in the United States, excluding food and fuel.
accounts for 33% of total waste generated in the United States.
Building renovation and demolition accounts for 91% of the C&D generated each year, while new construction accounts for only 9%.
Between 2000 to 2030, 27% of existing buildings will be replaced and 50% of the total building stock will be constructed.
The Competition:
The Lifecycle Building Challenge will be a web-based competition. Entrants are asked to submit designs and ideas that support disassembly and anticipate the future use of building materials. The Challenge will be open to built and un-built work, and has three main categories:
Building: an entire building from foundation to roof
Component: a single building assembly, system, or connector
Service: a tool, method, or other idea

Timetable:
31 Oct 2006 – Competition Launch
07 Dec 2006 – Inquiries Deadline
14 Feb 2007- Submission Deadline Queries
Eligibility: The competition is open to everyone, but is in particular aimed at architects, including landscape architects, who are encouraged to work with ethnologists, anthropologists, sociologists, human geographers and representatives of other disciplines with competencies that are relevant to provide a response to the brief’s requirement of focusing on urban life.
Awards: Total 750,000 DKK. Of this sum, a 1st Prize of at least DKK 150,000 will be awarded. The Orestad Development Corporation intends to ask the winners of the competition to provide consultancy services in relation to the realisation of the winning entries.
The Competition:
Orestadsselskabet (Orestad Development Corporation) invites entries that can lead to the creation of attractive, unique and functional urban spaces that will form a good setting for the diverse life that will unfold in Orestad South in the coming years. Orestad South is covered by the most extensive local plan in Danish history in terms of square metres covered. A total of 1.2 million square metres of residential facilities, commercial facilities and public institutions will emerge in this area in the coming decade, forming a completely new urban area south of Copenhagen. A vibrant city district is first and foremost shaped and animated by the people who use it on an everyday basis: at home, at work or in the various public institutions and facilities. For this reason, the new urban spaces must not only be characterised by a high aesthetic quality; they must also be a robust and inspiring setting for everyday life in all its diversity. The competition for the design of urban spaces in Orestad South is testimony to our belief that the development of high-quality urban spaces is crucial in making an urban district attractive and viable in the long run. Entrants are requested to present proposals for an overall plan of the urban spaces in the planned city district. The urban space plan must give an overview of the various types of activities and functions and their locations in the three north-south urban spaces and the seven open squares included in the competition. Entrants are also requested to present motivated outline proposals for a number of activity fields in the three north-south urban spaces and to present outline proposals for the layout, functions and activities of the seven squares in the area.

Location: Manchester, UK
Language: English
Timetable:
09 Feb 2007 – Stage 1 Concept Submission Deadline (2:00 pm)
19 Feb 2007 – Shortlist Announced
Mar 2007 – Stage 2 Shortlisted Presentations
Eligibility: teams which include both architects and engineers
Stage 1 Jury: Tom Bloxham MBE, Urban Splash; Nick Johnson, Urban Splash; Clive Wilding, English Partnerships; David Chilton, English Partnerships; Lyn Fenton, New East Manchester; Martin Stockley, Martin Stockley Associates (Infrastructure Engineers for New Islington); Andrew Grant, Grant Associates (Landscape Architects for New Islington); Chris Wise, Expedition Engineering and Professor at Yale School of Architecture; Julian DeMetz, DeMetz Forbes Knight (Architects at New Islington)
Awards:
An equal honorarium of £2,000 + VAT will be paid to each competitor invited to Stage 2. The winner’s honorarium represents an advance on their professional fee.
Fee: £25
The Competition:
The ambitious search is on for a team of architects and engineers to design and deliver a new footbridge over the Rochdale Canal which will link New Islington, Manchester’s Millennium Community, with its neighbor Ancoats Urban Village. The open competition, organised by RIBA with the support of the ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers), together with the partners for New Islington, Urban Splash, English Partnerships and New East Manchester, is an exciting challenge. The judges are looking for a solution which addresses the very practical constraints at the site, such as different levels, clearances and access points, but at the same time creates an object of beauty, in the spirit of the architectural aspirations set out in Will Alsop’s framework for New Islington. We’ve heard the debates about whether the architect or the engineer designs a bridge! We’ve also seen slick bridge competition entries which don’t look quite so slick when they’re built! We want this bridge to be something special, but we also want you to show us something which will work. We are therefore looking for consortia capable of producing the full picture – aesthetics and engineering. We aren’t bothered who does what within your team (or who leads it) – we just want a fantastic bridge!
Stage 1 seeks basic ideas, a quick sketch, presented on a single A1 boards. A shortlist of five will be selected and the authors invited to work up their ideas and attend an interview.
Anyone wishing to submit an entry must register with the RIBA Competitions Office to receive an official “declaration form.” Only entries accompanied by a declaration form will be considered.

The Competition:
The year 2008 will mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City, the cradle of the French presence in North America. By establishing a post at the foot of Cap Diamant, on the shores of the St. Lawrence, Samuel de Champlain, the city’s founder, had chosen a millennia-old trading site. Quebec City has since continued as a place for exchange and encounter up to the present day. In this spirit, the festivities for Quebec City’s 400th anniversary have been assigned the theme of MEETINGS AND ENCOUNTERS.
The Ephemeral Gardens will be an artistic event where creators from different horizons (see website for details on horizons) are invited to bring an artistic viewpoint on the major themes of Quebec City’s 400th anniversary. This viewpoint will be expressed through creator gardens : outdoor creations using mediums that combine different elements, including plant materials. The gardens will have a night life. Lighting, however simple it may be, is to be included by the creators in their garden concepts. It should be sporadic and gradually dim each evening until there’s no illumination at all. Thus, people could visit the gardens in the dark, with special guided tours being planned for certain occasions. The gardens may also be visible from the uppertown. All lighting, however, must be developed in compliance with the Espace 400e Sustainable Development Plan. The total budget earmarked for creating each garden is $20,000 CAN, including materials and labour.

08 Dec 2006 – Exhibitition documents submission deadline

Since the opening in 1896, Taipei Botanical Gardens has been a landmark for research, display and studies of the field of biology, forest resources and other sciences as well as functioning as the urban green lung for Taipei city. Over a hundred years plant collection, there is an astonishing variety of plants in the garden, each marked with its formal scientific name, its place of origin, its applications, unique features etc. Beside public plant exhibitions, the Gardens is manned with research staff. The garden itself is a living herbarium. Research teams work on individual research projects in the areas of systematic taxonomy, morphological botany, biological interactions, ethno botany, conservation of rare species etc. Those individual experiments are in continually in process within the Botanical Garden. The Garden has a collection of over 1500 living species, bordering the Nan-Hai Art District. Together, the Gardens with the Nan-Hai Campus contain various traditional Chinese style as well as historical buildings used as museum, broadcasting radio station and education centers, among others. Facing the new era, the Garden and its surrounding area needs a new plan, a new approach that will encompass the re-definition of its architecture and the environment within the 12.5 hectares site, aspiring to become the new symbol for Green Taipei.
The Competition:
The site is strategically located in the Capital, neighboring the Presidential Palace and CKS Memorial Hall and other significant public buildings within the city. Therefore, aside for the design of the proposed site, the competition also calls for a comprehensive urban planning that correlate to the site surrounding, especially the western district of Taipei city. The main goal is to strive for a design that will mark a new beginning toward the future growth of the urban core; the new design should incorporate the meaningful natural ecology with the rich cultural heritage found within the site, proposing a plan that strives for efficient allocation of the urban green resources, including the horticulture environ, ultimately, to revive the site‚ genius loci, and putting the Garden on the world botanical garden map. The design site includes the Botanical Gardens and Nan-Hai Campus; the main idea is to fuse nature with cultural resources in to an unified whole, as the baside guidelines for the comprehensive planning and design, the site area is about 12.5 hectares.

The building projected is to be completed by the end of 2009.
The competitors having been selected in advance by the Sponsor are:
• Adjaye Associates, London
• Gigon Guyer Architekten, Zurich
