THE COMPETITION:

The founding and construction of John Paull II Centre in Krakow was an initiative of His Excellency Archbishop Cardinal Dziwisz, for many years a Secretary of Holy Father John Paul II, who, after His death, undertook ministration in Krakow Archidiocese. This initiative arose from the willingness and duty to commemorate John Paul II, the Great Pope, His union with homeland and the beloved Krakow, and to popularise and creatively build on His teaching. The ideas of the Centre will be implemented through two autonomous bodies:

(1) The House of John Paul II with a Museum preserving memory of His life and instruction and a Scientific Institute in which appropriate documentation and library collections will be stored and research into papal teaching will be carried out. The institute will perform the mission to popularise the teaching.

(2) Retreat Centre, which will be involved in formation activity. The above presented idea and the activity programme of the Centre requires adequate architectural space. Apart from the above listed buildings, i.e. the House of John Paul II and the retreat centre, the entire spatial complex will be complemented by necessary service facilities, including hotels, catering and commercial outlets.

The location is assumed to be the postexploitation site of former Krakowskie Zaklady Sodowe ‘Solvay’ (Krakow Soda Plant ‘Solvay’), with in the area of so called ‘White Seas,’ situated between the Wilga River and the railway line to Zakopane and the designed city centre by-pass, the so called ‘Lagownicka route.’

BUDGET:

The Client assumes that the maximal total costs of works completed based on the Contest Project considered the best, excluding the costs of hotels and the camping site should not exceed the amount of 107,000,000 PLN gross. This includes:

– maximal cost of preparing the design documentation: 7,000,000 PLN gross

– maximal cost of works completed based on the designed documentation: 100,000,000 PLN gross

The above expenditure includes the completion of works, preparation of complete design documentation, technical specifications of works completion and acceptance, author’s supervision, obtaining building permit as well as preparation of supplementary studies (expert opinions, research) and other necessary co-ordination, studies and materials.
