Design Challenge:
The design of the present Mainz City Hall from the 1970s was by Arne Jacobsen and Otto Weitling. Since then, it has received landmark protection; but it is now deficient in many respects and has to be renovated to measure up to current working environment and building standards. The area immediately surrounding the building has been the object of much criticism over the years, primarily because of its unfriendly appearance. Therefore, the purpose of this competition is to investigate the site’s potential for better integration into its immediate environment, both contextually and in terms of its materiality. The results of this competition are intended to serve as background material for a public discussion leading to eventual changes in the site.
