Design Challenge:
Each year Modern Atlanta (MA) celebrates architecture and design with a week-long celebration around Atlanta. This year the executive directors and founders of MA have asked the Young Architects Forum of Atlanta to create a competition for a temporary outdoor installation, with a budget of $5,000, which will act as a beacon and marker for the week of events. The structure is to be installed and operational during the MA events, currently planned for June 1-6, 2010. The project is not only to accentuate the series of events organized by MA, but will also be an event of its own celebrating young talents showing their work to the public.

Special care should be taken in the selection of materials and construction techniques as those that can be prefabricated and installed quickly with simple tools will work best, given the assembly crew. Modularity is encouraged as pieces and parts of the project should be able to be moved and carried by one or two individuals. Consideration should also be given to the possibility of assembly/disassembly so the installation could potentially be reassembled in other locations in the future.

Submission Requirements:
No more then a 10'-0" x 10'-0” footprint within the Site constrains. Please see the Site tab for a Site Plan and context information. The height is to be determined by the participant, but all aspects of public safety should be accounted. The work should be able to stand independently with incorporated safety provisions as defined by local codes. Entries should take into account the process of assembly, takedown, portability and transportability. The goal is to have ability to assemble within 24 hours. Natural elements should be considered in the design. Although not a requirement, participants are encouraged to engage systems and ideas of sustainability as well as innovative program types.

Submission form, maximum 500 word abstract, two (2) 36”x24” (PDF – 200 DPI) landscape boards including:
Written Description
Sections, Elevations, Perspectives
Estimated Cost
Unique Details to be considered for assembly
