Design Challenge:  The contest goal is the reuse of the steel beams from the Perimetral elevated highway in Rio de Janeiro. The Perimetral elevated highway contains 905 corten steel beams 40m long.

The competition proposes rethinking the transformation of Rio trough the demolition of the Perimetral elevated highway. An icon that has segregated the city center from the Guanabara’s Bay. Reusing the Perimetral’s steel beams is also a suggestion of a new perspective over the city’s transformation: Reperimetralizar. Perimetral elevated highway was born as a technical solution for a Rio the Janeiro that was modernizing to the automobile use. Its demolition is part of a project to modernize the port area: Porto Maravilha

The question is: what’s the meaning of “modernize”? What for? What kind of city are we building?
