Eligibility: Open to individual students, student teams or students participating with professionals in any field appropriate to the project goals. Instructors of relevant classes or design studios may also register their entire class – such a class may be subdivided into separate individuals or teams that will become part of the overall contestant pool. All contestants and teams have the choice of participating under an assumed team name or their own. Additionally, participants have the option to communicate with other contestants online via Email, Facebook and other social media sites.

25 September 2011 – Registration payment due
2 October 2011- Registration closes
9-16 October 2011 – Election Period 1 – 1st round of peer balloting
20-27 November 2011 – Election Period 2 – 2nd round of peer balloting
8-15 January 2012 – Election Period 3 – final round of peer balloting
27 January 2012 – Announcement of winners
Jury: Winners of the competition will be determined by a progressive peer-review process that involves all contestants. Contestants will be able to see and review each others’ work during the judging process.

First Prize – $20,000
Second Prize – $10,000
Third Prize – $5,000
Design challenge:
Competing teams are challenged with designing a building including three economical, energy efficient and attractive dwellings for three families. Through the creative use of active and passive solar technologies, among other sustainable solutions, contestants must create a design project with the potential for development into a net-zero building.
