Sauerbruch Hutton Out, Marshall In: Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Australia

Sydney’s new Museum of Contemporary Art is scheduled to open in March 2012. Designed by Sydney-based architect, Sam Marshall (above), it is near Sydney’s waterfront and is the final stage of a long and controversial process which began with a competition in 2001, won by the Berlin firm, Sauerbruch Hutton. That process was terminated early on, and a new process resulting in the present design began shortly thereafter. The new, boxier design is somewhat reminiscent of Cincinnati’s Museum of Modern Art by Zaha Hadid — quite different from the horizontal structure proposed by Sauerbruch Hutton (below). It should be noted that this appears to be a different site than that of the original competition.
